History

Founded in 1908, Frilford Heath Golf Club was born from the vision of Dr Harry Challenor, A. E. Preston and T.S. Skurray, local sportsmen who leased the sandy, naturally undulating Oxfordshire terrain from Magdalen College.

Shortly after, they commissioned five-time Open Champion J.H. Taylor to design the original Red Course. His layout – defined by firm fairways, gorse, and heather – quickly established the club as a premier destination for traditional heathland golf.

As the club’s reputation grew, it expanded its footprint to offer a more diverse playing experience:

  • The Green Course (1930): Designed by J.H. Turner, this addition introduced a shorter but highly strategic test, requiring precision and thoughtful shot-making through more intimate corridors of the estate.
  • The Blue Course (1994): Architect Simon Gidman was brought in to complete the 54-hole estate that members and visitors experience today. The Blue Course provides a modern, expansive contrast to the historic layouts, featuring large greens and strategic bunkering.

Throughout its century-long history, Frilford Heath has remained a cornerstone of competitive golf. It is a long-standing host for European Tour Qualifying School, the English Amateur and Regional Open Qualifying. In 2026 it will host The Senior Amateur Championship. Our tournament-quality layouts provide a stern test to even the most skilled players.

Today, the club is as much a sanctuary as it is a sporting venue. As a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Frilford Heath is dedicated to preserving its rare natural habitats. By balancing championship golf courses with active environmental stewardship, the club ensures that the unique landscape J.H. Taylor first stepped onto in 1908 remains preserved for generations to come.
